Synthetic Population Estimates by Indigenous Status, 2000 to 2010

In response to a significant demand within the Queensland Government and community, the Office of Economic and Statistical Research (OESR) has developed detailed synthetic estimates by Indigenous status.

The estimates are available by:

These estimates are the result of a synthesis—the combining of data from two or more sources to form a new data product. In this case, data from the 2001 and 2006 Censuses of Population and Housing have been combined with population estimates and projections published by the Australian Bureau of Statistics, to form a new set of population estimates by Indigenous status.

Synthetic estimates should be used with caution. These estimates have been made available for small age, sex, Indigenous status and SLA categories, but a high degree of accuracy at this level of disaggregation should not be assumed. It is strongly recommended that the estimates be aggregated (for example, into larger geographical units or broader age groups) before being used. In addition, data cells may not sum to published totals due to rounding.

Two technical papers have been developed to support the synthetic estimates: a Methodology Paper and Data Quality Paper.

OESR will be releasing updated estimates later in 2012, for Queensland SA2s and local government areas (LGAs) based on the new Australian Statistical Geography Standard. The new estimates will be compiled using 2011 Census data (scheduled for release in June 2012) and preliminary re-based small-area population estimates for SA2s and LGAs (scheduled for release in August 2012).
