Triumph in the Tropics, 1959
The Historical Committee of The Centenary Celebrations Council of Queensland commissioned Sir Raphael Cilento, Kt., with assistance from Clem Lack, Snr, to compile and edit the 1959 publication Triumph in the Tropics: An Historical Sketch of Queensland.
The book contains three parts spanning the discovery and separation of the colony, Queensland's expanding frontiers and expansion, and the civic political and economic growth.
The editor describes Queensland as "daughter in her mother's house" (1824-1859); "mistress in her own" (1859-1901) and ever since, "a full and equal partner in the Commonwealth of Australia".
They describe their book as being a "basement upon which later writers may continue the structure, story by story". It is therefore not coincidental that the Q150 theme in 2009 is our people, our places, our stories.
Throughout Queensland's history, the Royal Historical Society of Queensland has collected Queenslanders' stories and its contribution to the Triumph of the Tropics is acknowledged. Since 1915, the society's journal, renamed in 2008 to Queensland History Journal, has provided a wealth of information about Queensland's history.
