Registration of Births, Marriages, and Deaths, Queensland, 1861
From separation in 1859 to 1861 the Queensland population grew a total of 28.97 per cent to reach 34,367 people. Based on December 2008 figures, Queensland’s growth rate is approximately 2.5 per cent per annum with an estimated population of 4,349,500 people.
Births in 1861 exceeded the number of deaths by 924 whereas in 2007 births exceeded deaths by over 35,600 people.
In terms of marriages, the report appears to highlight the “competition” between the various churches and their marriage rates. Today over 60 per cent of marriages are performed by marriage celebrants.
Thankfully the causes of death have changed over the years in Queensland. The Registrar-General noted in 1861 “On examining the analysis of causes of Death … it is impossible to avoid being struck with the large proportion of Deaths, 119, arising from external causes such as accidents, suicides, murders, &c, &c, they actually form 23.85 per cent, of the total Deaths from all causes, by far the greater number of these arising from any one case are from drowning, namely 42; - is not intoxication the principal cause of most of these deaths?”
The large number of deaths of children must also attract attention, 177 having died under two years of age, being 35.47 per cent of the total number of deaths registered in the colony. In 2007 child mortality was at its lowest level in history at approximately 2 per cent of all deaths across Australia. Nevertheless, external causes, especially road accidents and drownings constitute the majority of these deaths in children 1 to 4 years of age.
