Surat Basin Population Report

Surat Basin Population Report front cover

This report contains resident and non-resident population statistics for local government areas (LGAs) and key population centres in the Surat Basin in June 2010. The previous edition of the Surat Basin Population Report was released in 2008.

The report contains non-resident worker numbers and full-time equivalent (FTE) population estimates of the three LGAs in the Surat Basin – Maranoa, Toowoomba and Western Downs, as well as projections of the non-resident workforce to 2017 and resident population projections to 2031. Non-resident worker data are derived from three surveys of accommodation providers and resource companies conducted by OESR in mid-2010.

Non-resident workers who fly-in/fly-out or drive-in/drive-out (FIFO/DIDO) to the Surat Basin for work are not included in the estimated resident population (ERP) of the region. The FTE population measure – calculated by adding non-resident worker numbers to the ERP – provides a more complete picture of the region’s service population and a better measure of total demand for goods, services and infrastructure.
