Our First Half-Century, 1909 (archived)
This book was published under the authority of the Government of Queensland to celebrate Queensland's first fifty years. It provides a very straightforward account of Government and its activities over the half century. It says that responsible government in Queensland was initiated by "a mere handful of men ... although it must not be forgotten that some of the services most worth recording have been rendered by men whose names have not become household words, and whose reward has been found in the lifelong consciousness that they have unobtrusively done their duty to the State".
Queensland was known as the country of magnificent distances, "so backward was the farming industry that in 1860 the total area under cultivation was 3,353 acres in a country of greater extent than France and Germany". Such change in farming occured over the fifty years, that the authors devoted one of the four parts of the book to Primary Industries. The other parts are "Our Natal Year", "From Natal Year to Jubilee", and "Our Jubilee Year".
The full PFD is 288 pages, the main body of the book is 161 pages and a further 96 pages are in appendixes. The remaining pages include the table of contents, provide introductory remarks, maps and copies of historical records.
