The CensusAtSchool is an interesting and relevant resource for teachers
at both primary and secondary level to use in a wide range of subject areas. Positive
outcomes from the CensusAtSchool include:
- The CensusAtSchool is a “real-life” activity with resource materials and instructions complete and ready to download from the website (www.oesr.qld.gov.au). Students can see the results of their participation in the project.
- CensusAtSchool was administered via the website, encouraging students to use the Internet to locate and access information.
- Teachers and students have access to interesting and fun data about students from all over Queensland to use in lessons. The CensusAtSchool website provides access to both raw data as well as analysed data. Data has been confidentialised, so that no individual or school can be identified. (Schools were to keep a copy of their own data for comparison purposes.)
- Teachers and students have access to data from the CensusAtSchool in the United Kingdom. Many questions are similar, allowing comparisons between the two countries. Students in South Africa, New Zealand and Canada are also participating in their own CensusAtSchool, giving Queensland schools access to even more international data.
- Worksheets relating to the CensusAtSchool are available on the website.
- Teachers can get help and information via the website or by email (statistics@treasury.qld.gov.au).
How Australia Takes a Census is an Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) publication designed to educate Australians about the Census of Population and Housing. Teachers can use this publication as a resource when discussing the census with students. It includes a history of the census, the process by which a census is planned, the way it is conducted and processed and the type of output available.
