Historical Register of Local Government Names

Q150 logo

Have you ever wondered when Nundah became part of Kedron Municipality or part of Brisbane City? Did you know that Sandgate was part of Nundah Division? Broadsound has always been Broadsound, until 2008 when it became part of the Isaac Regional Council and Maryborough always Maryborough before it became part of the Frazer Coast Region in 2008.

In 1861, the Registrar-General Frederick Orme Darvall noted to Parliament “I beg most respectfully to draw your attention to the unsatisfactory state of the several registration divisions of the colony, their boundaries are vague—in some cases unknown—and the area of many of them far too large; this remark I submit applies more or less to all the other divisions of the colony”.

Even with technology, boundaries present a problem for many jurisdictions.

The Historical Register of Local Government Names spreadsheet provides information on the various name and concordance changes the Government has used over the years. So if you find you are reading about Allora in 1861, in today’s terms this includes Warwick Shire (and, since 2008, is known as the Southern Downs Region).
